The Viking spectacle helmet Gjermundbu with chainmail aventail is a replica, based on the find from an excavation in 1943 from a Viking Age burial mound in Gjermundbu/Norway. The restored original can nowadays be viewed in the museum in Oslo. This Viking Age spectacle helmet dates from the 9th century and offered its wearer good face and head protection with sufficient visibility.
The spectacle helmet is reinforced by the four intersecting and hand-forged bands, making it extremely robust. At the front is the riveted "spectacle" piece, which gives the helmet its name. At the back, a chainmail aventail made of riveted round rings has been attached, just like on the original. The entire helmet has been given an artificially aged finish, which perfectly matches its appearance. The Gjermundbu helmet has a riveted, high-quality, and adjustable padded lining, complete with a leather chin strap and an authentic brass buckle as a fastener. The Viking spectacle helmet Gjermundbu with chainmail aventail is perfect for Viking re-enactment, but also for collectors and fans of early medieval armor and Viking replicas.
