Viking Tunic

The Viking Tunic as an item of clothing existed long before the Vikings, as it originated in antiquity and was already worn by Romans as garments. Like the Romans, the tunic spread throughout Europe and thus also reached the Germanic tribes in Northern Europe. In the early Middle Ages, the tunic was an indispensable garment. Worn as an undertunic on the skin, there were also many variants as outerwear made from a wide variety of fabrics and embellishments. While noble Franks in medieval Europe wore tunics made of fine fabrics such as silk and linen, due to climate and seasons, tunics made of wool and hemp were more common among the Vikings. This clothing was absolutely vital in the far north and at sea.

Why is this garment called a Viking tunic at all?

Most tunics referred to as Viking tunics are based on finds from the North in the Early Middle Ages, such as Viborg, Haithabu, or even the Bernuthsfeld Tunic. Thus, they fit perfectly as garments for what are now called Vikings and give a good picture of what Vikings wore as clothing in the Early Middle Ages, which is why we find the designation fitting, and they are also worn in medieval reenactment according to these cuts.

What colors did a Viking Tunic have?

Early medieval clothing for most Vikings had to be functional and affordable or manufacturable, which is why colors like gray, brown, green, and also undyed fabrics, i.e., natural colors, were common, as archaeological finds also prove. Black is more than complex to dye, so it fits more into the realm of film & fantasy with series like Vikings; historically, if it occurred at all, it should have been the exception.

Why are your tunics made of cotton?

In early medieval Europe, cotton was probably not common; fabrics like linen and wool were more usual. Unlike a wool tunic, which we also offer in our medieval online shop, linen is an authentic fabric, but it also has a few small problems. You have to be more careful with its care, linen wrinkles easily, and it is more expensive. Our Viking tunics made of cotton canvas, also known as historical sailcloth, have a "rustic, old" look, are robust, easier to care for, and are still fairly priced. If you still prefer a linen tunic, please feel free to contact us, and we will put you in touch with a medieval tailor who can create a custom linen tunic for you.

What should I consider when buying my Viking Tunic?

The Viking Tunic is not just a perfect garment for all Norsemen. Even the average visitor to a medieval market or Viking fan can safely choose this clothing. For a historical look, we recommend combining it with Viking or Thorsberg trousers and leg wraps; in any case, you should wear a leather belt around your waist, otherwise the tunic will look like a sack! Otherwise, you can opt for a short-sleeved tunic in summer and, for a LARP event in winter, so you don't freeze, naturally a wool tunic.
