Medieval Pouch

Medieval Bag

A bag is a container made of different materials that allows you to transport things safely, and it was no different in the Middle Ages. From the early to the High Middle Ages, most people used pouches and sachets made of leather or fabric to carry small and important belongings. Leather belt bags were occasionally found, but they seem to have been more status symbols, as some were elaborately decorated. This makes perfect sense, as the average person could practically make pouches and sachets from linen, flax, and leather themselves, and they were simply more practical. From the 13th century onwards, belt bags with closures and occasional embellishments in various shapes became popular, first in a D-shape, then semi-circular as evidenced by a find from Runneburg in Thuringia, and later also trapezoidal belt bags documented by the Maciejowski Bible, the so-called Crusader Bible, and thus known as a pilgrim's bag. Simple leather and fabric pouches were still widely used by most people, for example as purses.

What should I consider when buying a medieval bag?

First, you should be clear about exactly what you need one of our medieval bags for. If you only want to store a few small items that you need frequently, then we recommend our simple leather pouches or belt bags with lacing, a simple button, or a toggle hook. These bags and pouches are easy to open, and you can get to your items quickly. However, if you are transporting valuable items, a leather belt bag with a buckle is the best solution, and you should only make sure that everything fits inside. If you want to transport a bit more, for example, a cloak for cool evenings at a LARP convention or things for the children when visiting a medieval market, then take a look at our shoulder bags – they look good, are robust, and do their job!
