This hand-painted knight belongs to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, one of the two papal knightly orders of the Middle Ages, alongside the Knights of Malta. Although the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem was not directly in the tradition of the Crusades, it played a significant role in securing Jerusalem for the Pope and the Church.
This knight holds his one-handed sword in his right hand and his knight's shield with the order's coat of arms, which is also found on his white surcoat, in his armored left hand. The combination of chainmail and plate armor elements, as well as his great helm, fits perfectly into the Crusader period.
