The daring image of the fearless Landsknechts, with their extravagant and striking garments and adventurous deeds, has survived to this day. In their time, they were more often regarded as insatiable drunkards and demanding eaters. Officers feared their wrath if food deliveries failed or their quality was poor. Many Landsknecht songs complain of hunger and cold, but also dream of roasted chickens and cool wine. But what did Landsknechts have on their plates during the Renaissance?

The Landsknecht Cookbook from Zauberfeder Verlag explores the facts behind the legend of the Landsknechts in a detailed introduction. What was their world and daily life like? What provisions were available to them? What foods did they know and how did they prepare them? Based on 15th and 16th-century Renaissance sources, the book ultimately offers over 50 recipes that were familiar to the Landsknechts and nourished them in good times or lean. Each original recipe comes with instructions for preparation in the modern kitchen.

The author Volker Bach has been active in Living History for twenty years. Culinary history has particularly fascinated him since his studies of history and English. In addition to his work as a language teacher and translator, he gives historical cooking courses. This is his first German-language book.
