Pine kindling was once "the poor man's light." In the Middle Ages, only nobles and wealthy citizens usually had candles. The common people lit a piece of pine kindling, which consists of resinous conifer wood. With a little care, they then had a few hours of light. Many peoples, such as the Germans, also used pine kindling to build a fire with the help of smouldering tinder. Solid pine kindling can also be split into smaller pieces, depending on its intended use.
