Noble Viking Apron Dress with Embroidery
Viking apron dresses were an elementary component of female Viking clothing. This type of overdress usually had a simple tubular shape and was also known as a strap dress, hanger dress, or smokkr. Viking apron dresses, in their simple forms, served as aprons to protect clothing, but they also existed as decorated versions with braids, embroideries, and other embellishments, as evidenced by Viking Age finds.
The noble Viking apron dress was made of robust cotton, has a loose fit and is slit at the sides. Hem, straps and neckline are in contrasting colors. The embroidery on the chest is in Jellinge style and shows two Viking Age dragons. The original motif dates from the 10th century of the Early Middle Ages and can be found on the so-called Jelling Cup of the Danish Viking King Gorm. The decorative seam at the hem and neckline consists of witch stitches, which were already known in the Early Middle Ages and were often used on hems.
