According to legend, the Claddagh ring originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, where an enslaved Irishman made such a ring for his betrothed who had remained behind, hoping to be able to give it to her upon his return, which he did.

The bronze Claddagh ring features two hands holding a heart topped with a crown. The heart symbolizes love, the hands friendship or trust, and the crown fidelity and loyalty. Since the late 20th century, the Claddagh ring has enjoyed great popularity as an engagement and wedding ring even outside of Claddagh and Ireland.

A bronze Claddagh ring is worn as an engagement ring or wedding ring as follows:

If worn on the right hand with the point of the heart facing away from the wearer (i.e., towards the fingertips), it signals the search for a partner.

Worn on the right hand with the heart facing towards the wearer, it signifies that a loving relationship already exists.

The ring on the left hand with the point of the heart facing towards the wearer corresponds to a wedding ring.
