Medieval earrings

Our earring or ear jewelry is a piece of jewelry worn on the ear and is fastened through an earlobe piercing with a stud or dangle. Earrings have been worn in almost all periods by many cultures and were usually made of metal, but also bone, wood, horn, and similar robust materials. This ear jewelry is often adorned not only with classic Celtic and medieval patterns but also with glass, gemstones, and pearls. Even if you don't believe it, in the Middle Ages, ear jewelry, as you know it today, was rather rarely worn in Europe. Before that, from Antiquity up to the times of the Vikings, things looked a bit different, as evidenced by findings of partly extraordinary Viking ear jewelry. However, from the Viking Age, so-called temple rings of the Slavs, Rus, and Alemanni, which optically resemble classic ear jewelry, are often quickly mistaken for earrings. Temple rings, however, were not worn on the ear, but on the side of the head or near the forehead on a fabric band or a headscarf.

Nowadays, most people wear medieval ear jewelry in everyday life as fashion jewelry. But also in the Gothic, Asatru, and Wicca scenes, medieval-looking ear jewelry is gladly used and worn according to personal taste and due to its special appearance. Earrings, studs, and dangles with Viking Age and Celtic symbols made of silver and bronze are often an eye-catcher and a special gift.
